12 HOUR

A 12 hour ultra from two points,

Point A: Maud Railway station

Point B: Auchnagatt village hall

Distance between the two stations is 4.3miles

Starting at Maud Railway station and running out to Auchnagatt and back again continually for 12 hours.

The route is flat and fast, all on trail covering the Formartine and Buchan railway.

To find out some history from the Formartime & Buchan Railway see the buttons below.

The Formartine & Buchan 12 hour Ultra-Marathon was created by Gavin Taylor & Kevin Mottram, both experienced ultra runners with an intention to create a tough, challenging and fun event in the North East of Scotland. Utilising the disused railway line which travels from Dyce to Fraserburgh and travels through Maud railway station which is the main fork to continue onto Peterhead. The idea came about during discussions whilst travelling back and forth between different races throughout Scotland and we noticed at the time there were a lack of ultras in the North East and wanted to incorporate our ideas back into our local community.

The race starts at Maud Station beside the famous railway museum travelling along the flat runnable trail path towards Auchnagatt covering a rough distance of 4.3 miles. Upon reaching Auchnagatt a swift about turn to view the line from a different direction, you are guaranteed to see the highland coos on your way but be careful as they have been known and found to be enjoying walk on the line!!

The route is flat as expected, its a railway line!, however there's a slight incline in both directions to the midway point (approximately 100ft per direction). As the route is flat we are expecting some big distances to be covered by the more experienced faster runners and we are eager to find out what can be achieved. Both of the race directors have used the railway line as their training ground over the years and Gavin has trailed out a 6 hour stint on the exact race route and thinks that faster runners could possibly achieve 80-90 miles. All depends who has the guts and determination on the day (is this you!!).

As the route is flat this type of event opens the door to the non experienced distance runner looking to step up into the ultra distances. The route will utilise both Maud and Auchnagatt stations for fueling which means you can travel light knowing well you are not to far away from fuel and a friendly kick up the arse from your support crew.
